BioIn Dollhouse, Eliza Dushku plays a young woman named Echo. Prior to having her mind wiped, Echo was a college activist named Caroline Farrell.
Now she is one of a group of men and women called Actives or Dolls who are neurally imprinted with "personality packages" that encompasses things such as memory, muscle memory, skills, and language. Sheltered in a secret futuristic dormitory called the Dollhouse, Echo and other individuals are imprinted with customized personality for performing any of a wide variety of assignments that can be romantic, adventurous, illegal, etc, and mind-wiped into a child-like state with no memories after completing an assignment.
The series will follow Echo as she begins to develop a persistent memory and self-awareness across the many imprints and memory wipes. The basic story is about those with the money or connections to access a top secret illegal high tech facility, where anyone can basically fulfill their greatest fantasies. Echo and those like her, can basically reenact scenarios of romance, adventure or anything that is earthly possible. Much like an actor taking on a different acting role for each project, for the duration of the mission Echo becomes the person that they want her to be, and then when the scenario is over, she forgets all about it. Although, she eventually starts to remember bits and pieces, and gains self-awareness, and realizes that she's a person. Over time she'll have to figure out who she really is, what life is all about, and what it means to truly be human.
